Meet the new guy: Who’s the dude behind the drums?

Those of you who know us also know the difficulties we face in juggling the band member’s careers, home lives, coaching our kid’s youth sports teams, a variety of volunteer and philanthropic pursuits, participating in endurance events ourselves, pretending to be triathlon rock stars, and our busy lives on the reality TV circuit (what, you didn’t see us on American Idol?).
Juggling all that for one or two members, let alone an entire band, is near impossible and has forced us to beg, borrow, and steal drummers from other bands and, on occasion, resolve ourselves to bringing along a virtual drummer on the iPod when a human isn’t available.

It is therefore with great pleasure that we introduce you to the latest addition to the Ironband “triathlon, adventure racing, and rock and roll” team, Justin Montgomery, adventure racer, drummer, high-wire artist, and juggler extraordinaire.

Excerpt from the band’s bio page:

Justin Montgomery
Drums (standard and Japanese Taiko), cowbell, wooden sticks

Ironman Long-distance adventure race finishes: 10
PR: we don’t do PRs in adventure racing
Hours spent in med tent/ER: the ER is for panzies

Justin is the sole member of Ironband never to have completed an Ironman Triathlon. That said, his application for band membership by-passed the normal musical and triathlon experience requirements given his prowess in long-distance, multi-day adventure racing which, as reported by the rest of the band, is “a whole lot $!^&%*$ harder than a triathlon on a road with a well-marked course.

Justin brings an air of youth to the band and despite his penchant for bubble gum pop bands his setlist additions have brought an entirely new dimension to a live Ironband show. In addition to being a wizard with his sticks and a cowbell, Justin also serves as the band’s unofficial bartender and always shows up for rehearsal with just the right concoction for any time of the day or night.

Justin will be rockin’ his debut appearance on the drum kit with Ironband this weekend at the Kansas City Triathlon so stop by to say hi or to heckle!

Battle in the Tropics: Ironman 70.3 St. Croix

Ironman 70.3 St. CroixThe reports are coming in from last week’s Ironman 70.3 St. Croix and as always the athletes and spectators continue to rate this event at the top of their list of must-do destination triathlons.

Of course, if you don’t like heat, hills, rain, wind, conch fritters, or pina coladas, it may not be your cup of Chamois Butt’r, but for the rest of us it’s certainly a race that I’d put on my bucket list.

Buckets, incidentally, are what was coming down in the form of rain in the days leading up to the race. The weather on St. Croix is always a challenge and when paired up with the climbs on the bike leg this race is among the most challenging 70.3 races on the planet.

But buckets of rain begat buckets of endurance and fortitude and despite a number of crashes and flats it was a stellar day of racing with Angela Naeth setting a new course record and Andy Potts chasing down Lance Armstrong to take the titles in St. Croix.

Team Armstrong continued to draw large crowds of spectators and once again Lance proved that he’s a real contender on the 70.3 circuit so we wish him and the LIVESTRONG/IRONMAN partnership the best throughout the rest of the 2012 season.

Congratulations to all the finishers, and a special congratulations to long-time Ironband Friend and triathlete Steve Richards of Wichita, KS, who took seventh in his age group in St. Croix – way to go Steve!

Congratulations Brew to Brew Run – $80,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Fros and Hoes - 2012 Brew to Brew Run

Fros and Hoes - 2012 Brew to Brew Run

Despite being cooped up in a van with 16 sweaty people, a cooler of beer, and a guitar for the better part of a Sunday, this year’s Brew to Brew Run was as entertaining as it was successful in raising much-needed funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Team “Fros & Hoes” started the day in the tasting room at the Boulevard Brewery at 6:00am and finished roughly six hours, 44 miles, a cooler of beer, numerous power bars, a few cheeseburgers, and one stripper pole (story for another day) later in yet another tasting room in Lawrence, KS.

Now while that may not sound like a serious athletic event to you, make no mistake – the Fros and the Hoes took their roles seriously and were proud to be part of an event that has been raising money for the CFF for 18 years.

Congratulations to all of the teams and solo runners that participated in this year’s event – and kudos to the Kansas City Track Club for putting on a great event and raising an impressive amount of money for the CFF!

We’re Ready to Rock the Parkway!

Ironband @ the 2011 Rock The Parkway

Ironband @ the 2011 Rock The Parkway

We are looking forward to rockin’ the runners at the Rock the Parkway 5K and half marathon this Saturday!

We’re bringing our lean and mean two-man configuration for the live portion of the day as well as plenty of piped in tunes from the iPod and, if anyone would like to join us, a cheer team to help keep you motivated. In other words, run fast or the crazy person with the wireless microphone might catch you!

We’ll be stationed at roughly miles two and 11 on the course; at mile two, when your adrenaline is maxed out after the start and at mile 11 when you’ll be thinking to yourself, “Where is that #!@%&#$!%! finish line??

Thanks once again to McGonigle’s Market for hosting us at their location! Of course, it’s only natural, since our singer’s contract requires that any live performances be staged within 100 feet of freshly smoked meats.

If you aren’t running and you’re looking for a great spot to cheer on family and friends, join us at McGonigle’s at 79th St. & Ward Parkway for a morning of fun and then stick around for McGonigle’s fresh BBQ!

In its third year Rock the Parkway is at capacity with over 4500 runners registered for the half-marathon course and 2500 runners registered for the 5K course. The race is presented by Burns & McDonnell and benefits Science City at Union Station.

For more information visit the Rock the Parkway website.

O’Donnell & Williamson Win Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 70.3

Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 70.3

Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 70.3

Congratulations to Tim O’Donnell and Kelly Williamson for their victories at last week’s Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3!

O’Donnell surged past the front-runners to win the race after starting the run in fourth place while Williamson had to run down the leaders in similar fashion, earning her her second Ironman 70.3 champion title in the past month following her win in San Juan.

RESULTS:

Men:

1. Tim O’Donnell (USA) 3:47:40

2. Sebastian Kienle (DEU)3:48:03

3. Ronnie Schildknecht (CHE) 3:48:49

4. Michael Raelert (DEU) 3:50:08

5. Stephane Poulat (FRA) 3:52:35

Women:

1. Kelly Williamson (USA) 4:13:27

2. Yvonne VanVlerken (NLD) 4:18:47

3. Amy Marsh (USA) 4:20:16

4. Caitlin Snow (USA) 4:22:03

5. Margaret Shapiro(USA) 4:25:27

Hermann also marked Lance Armstrong’s second appearance on the Ironman 70.3 circuit. Despite entering T2 in first place and holding onto the lead for the first two laps of the run he wasn’t able to hold that pace and was eventually forced to walk as a result of GI issues. Lance managed to finish seventh and we look forward to seeing him again when he makes his next appearances at Ironman 70.3 Florida, Ironman 70.3 Hawaii, and goes for his first official full Ironman finish in France in June as he tries to qualify for October’s Ironman World Championship in Kona.

Congratulations to all the pros, age-groupers, first-timers, and more on your efforts!

Running in the Buff: the new Barefoot Running?

Running in the Buff

I recently came across an article that seemed to imply that “nude running” might just be the next barefoot running craze.

Um, really?

I get it; we entered this earthly plane in the buff and it is our most natural state. But for every time I’ve jogged to the curb to get paper in bare feet I have done so without any clothing precisely…well, never.

Now don’t get me wrong, given the appropriate circumstances I think a nude run can be quite empowering. In fact, I actually participated in my first nude run (at least since my infant years) as a college freshman. As a fraternity pledge I was coaxed into participating in an annual tradition called the “DG Relays,” named for the neighboring sorority house. In this hotly contested “race” pledges were required (asked nicely) to complete three “nude” laps around the neighboring sorority house. You couldn’t actually call it hazing, since an uncomfortably large number of our active members, who were not compelled to participate as a pledge rite of passage, also participated in this “race” at their own free will.

For a few of my fraternity brothers who shall remain nameless, three laps wasn’t enough, and by the end of the third lap they were all standing in front of the sorority house singing songs to the girls who, by this point, were hanging out of their windows and cheering, whistling, or threatening to call the police. Meanwhile the rest of us had returned to the clothed safety of our fraternity house. OK, so maybe it wasn’t so empowering.

Given recent legislation and an overall, if not unfortunate, crackdown on nudity in public, I’m not sure if the DG Relays still exist today (when is our reunion?). That said, there are reportedly numerous “bare” runs around the country and as the aforementioned article implied, they don’t seem to be going away.

A quote from the Frequently Asked Questions page for one such run:

The text is designed to be read, at one time, from start to finish. If you do not now have 1 1/2 hours to read this instructional text, please exit and come back later. This detailed text tutorial comprises the equivalent of 16 easy to read text pages.

Sixteen pages? Are you kidding me? The DG Relays had precisely five words in the instruction “manual”: strip, run three laps, return.

I highly doubt that any of the barefoot races out there include a 16-page instruction manual. Of course with a barefoot run you only have to worry about injuries to your feet and not your, well, you know.

But who knows, maybe bare runs will really take off. I can’t wait to see what the market does in response. I mean look at all the products designed for people who want to “feel” like they’re running barefoot even if they aren’t “actually” running barefoot. Clothes that make you “look” like you’re running nude even if you aren’t “really” running nude?

Oh wait, the exotic dance clubs already have that market cornered.

Good Luck Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship Athletes!

Craig Alexander - Every Second Counts

Good luck to all of the athletes racing in this weekend’s Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship!

Some of the world’s top Ironman athletes are gathered in Melbourne, Australia for this weekend’s event including Ironman Champions Craig Alexander and Mirinda Carfrae, Cam Brown, Luke McKenzie, Eneko Llanos, Rebekah Keat, Rachel Joyce, Belinda Granger, and more.

We were sad to hear that Ironband fan, Blazeman supporter, and occasional rock singer, Leanda Cave had to pull out of this weekend’s race and we hope that her recovery and training is back on schedule soon. Best wishes also go out to Julie Dibens on a speedy recovery after having surgery on her foot and knee which will cause her to miss much much of the 2012 season.

The band also sends good luck vibes to Ironman Champion Craig Alexander – Crowie, go show em’ what you can do on your home turf!

For more information or to follow the athletes during this weekend’s race visit the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship website.
